In most situations, an echocardiogram (ultrasound of the heart) is ordered by a medical doctor and performed at a hospital/clinic only when a patient has exhibited cardiac symptoms. However, HCM (Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy) is the silent cardiac killer, usually without any symptoms. 1 in 500 teens have HCM and it is almost always unknown. Often under athletic activity does HCM cause Sudden Cardiac Arrest, then death. Over 2,000 teen and college athletes die each year in the U.S. from unknown HCM.
Ultrasound examinations do not use ionizing radiation (as used in x-rays), thus there is no radiation exposure to the patient. Because ultrasound images are captured in real-time, they can show the structure and movement of the body's internal organs, as well as blood flowing through organs such as the heart chambers and heart valves. In some people with HCM, the thickened heart muscle can cause problems in the heart's electrical system, resulting in life-threatening abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias), so CTH adds an ECG.
Capture The Heart's unique ability to bring all of the diagnostic equipment directly on-site to your child’s school gives you the comfort of not feeling lost in a building or roadway. Simply schedule the time frame for your child’s school CTH HeartScreen, arrive at the school about 15 minutes early, and in typically 10 minutes or less, your child will have a blood pressure check, painless ECG and echo screening for HCM. All screenings are read and reported by a state board certified cardiologist!
According to the nation's health protection agency, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), congenital heart defects (CHDs) are the most common birth defects in babies born in the United States. These heart problems affect roughly 40,000 births per year -- over 100 each day.
